Steps

Entered the Sharp service menu by pressing the following buttons on the back of the projector, NOT on the remote:

Input
Up
Down
Enter
Enter
Menu

Entered the DLP section (you can use the remote now) by going down to highlight "DLP" and pressing Enter. These were my factory defaults:

VOLTAGE 1
CW-INDEX 127
R-BRIGHT 128
G-BRIGHT 128
B-BRIGHT 128
R-GAIN 92
G-GAIN 95
B-GAIN 99

Exited the service menu by entering the same button sequence: Input, Up, Down, Enter, Enter, Menu.

Used the Avia DVD to set these "user" settings:

Contrast +4
Bright -1
Color +1
Tint +3
Sharp -15

Noticed some very strange Color/Tint interactions. Any time Tint was adjusted, everything went bad. Any time Color was adjusted, everything synced up. Eventually, I settled on adjusting Tint first, then Color. As soon as Tint is changed, it's impossible to bring everything back in sync without then adjusting Color, so I really didn't have any choice.

These settings were based on the measurements and advice of others, primarily Don Stewart and Greg Rogers:

Red +1
Blue -2
CLR Temp -2

Red, Blue, and CLR Temp made up my current color temperature setting. The -2 CLR Temp setting was based on measurements taken by Don Stewart of Stewart Filmscreen and Greg Rogers of Widescreen Review magazine. Don posted his measurements on the AVS Forum and Greg wrote a review of the Sharp 9000 in his magazine. Don also recommended upping Red and lowering Blue a bit to get even closer to a 6500K color temperature. In a message to me he recommended +1 and -2.

Gamma: Standard
Theater Mode: Bright

Not only is the Bright theater mode brighter than the Normal mode, according to Don Stewart's measurements, it produces a better contrast ratio.

Service Menu Tips

  • Entering the service menu is easy. Exiting may take several tries.

  • When in the DLP section, pressing the Menu button takes you back to the main service menu.
